  •  they do. they are true believers (7+ / 0-)

I have watched countless hours of interviews and documentaries about them and listen/read accounts by former members ... they are true believers in their message

Fred Phelps. They are a family/cult which will probably die out once their founder/father passes away.

believe that will be the case.  Phred is only ancillary to their operations now - yes he is the head, but his daughters strongly carry his message.  While they probably won't be the media head, they will be the defacto leaders of the church.  Hell they are mostly that now.

They are so diciplined that even their teenage and young adult daughters (because there are more girls then boys in their coupound) do not question that they will never be able to marry and have children.  To them it's God's will

But they are looking to get boys to join their cult ... and woe to the few boys there are once they hit 18.  There will be a lot of pressure on them.

        •  The fact that he doesn't do much work (0+ / 0-)

doesn't mean he's not the idol they worship...they don't really even have a "message" to carry, it's strictly a rolling publicity stunt...since the "church" is basically just a family it will eventually be subject to the stresses of family, when Phelps goes there will probably be a power struggle within which may tear it apart...it happens all the time.
