I'll be happy to read this bill, but not sure if I can endorse it.

There's going to be a big difference between an assault weapons ban that was crafted before this mess and what might be accomplished now.

I see no problem with returning to the ban that was in place under Pres. Clinton.  I'm not sure this bill accomplishes that.

Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.

What were the gun laws under Clinton like and did we see a reduction in gun violence?

I'm skeptical about the efficacy of this bill due to the DOJ's assessments of it. I want an effective bill, not one that doesn't do what it is supposed to do which is to stop gun violence and to help keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

during the Clinton years. I was so happy when the Brady bills were passed, it never occurred to me then they would be undermined.  I was active then, because my kids were young, grade school age.

Here's a link to information about the original handgun bill.

Here's a link to information about the original assault weapons ban.

The handgun bill basically put in place most of the restrictions we see today on gun ownership, background checks and regulations for the sale of guns.  I recall there were big fights over the gun shows and weakening of some of those provisions.

The Assault Weapons Ban was passed in 1994. The second link to the AWB wiki article contains a fairly good summary of what constituted an assault weapon. I recall these were hotly debated topics and there was concern that gun manufacturers would find ways to skirt the law.

Yeah, I can't think of any good reason to exempt 900 types of assault weapons from a renewed ban bill.

Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.
