Let's do something effective for the roots and causes of these tragedies. And let's do it with love and sympathy and empathy. We need a complete, wholistic dialogue, not just a drum-beating, fractional response.
We're looking for a magic bullet to solve this. And declaring yet another war on a problem won't fix it either. This is a complex problem that won't be solved by simply passing gun legislation and calling troubled people evil.

We also risk polarizing the debate and the issues. I can see the fanatics on the right screeching "they're coming to take away my guns and bullets!" and the far left hollering "Let's seize all the guns and bullets!" (I know--this is an extreme example, but...)

We need to draw people together, not drive them apart. Everyone was shocked by Newtown, everyone could personalize the tragedy. And mental illness and social isolation cross all party lines.  If we could get people to examine all the issues, to come together to reasonably investigate and debate the causes of these episodes, maybe we could effect policies, strategies, that actually work.
