  •  The question is, IS it a problem? (5+ / 0-)

And if so, to what extent, and for how long? Such studies as have been done with serious controls (and WITHOUT a preconceived opinion) have indicated that any negative effects are temporary and fade relatively fast.

There may be individuals for whom this is not the case - in which instances, identifying them and providing appropriate treatment is clearly indicated.

Let us not forget Dr. Fredric Wertham, who charged onto the scene in the late 1940's with the preconception that crime comics were harmful to children (to say nothing of being full of all kinds of sleaze and smut) - and nearly wrecked the entire comics industry, without making any impact on what was then called "juvenile delinquency".

Wrong answers are worse than no answers - so let's do everything we can to be sure we're getting the right ones.

    None of your damn business!

    •  Have you seen some of these? (0+ / 0-)

Trying watching Vampire Diaries for a couple episodes, just as an example, to see densitized killing that is target marketed to young adults.

      •  I watched plenty of violence on TV (2+ / 0-)

and played lots of video games that involve violence, guns and all sorts of things. As. a. child.

In video games, you respawn. In life, you don't. I feel much more emotional when I see someone die or is dead.... in front of me. I've seen a few corpses in my life. I can never shake that feeling away for a few days. It's a feeling I don't get when I see characters die on a screen.

The people who can't discern reality from the imaginary have problems to begin with.

Why hello there reality, how are you doing?

      •  I don't need to go there (0+ / 0-)

There's an awful lot of dreck that panders to the basest parts of the lowest common denominator. Seems to me there always has been - at least, since mass publication became a reality - and there probably always will be.

I know what they were serving up on TV when I was growing up, and, believe me, there were plenty of screams about "desensitized violence" then too.  (Ever hear of a show called The Rifleman? Dude had a specially modified long gun that functioned like a semiautomatic. There was a lot of caterwauling about that, especially since the show always opened with him going blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam-blam with it, and you could see how fast he was firing. But the point of the stories was that his trick gun was the last resort - and sometimes he didn't need it at all. Nonetheless, I preferred Maverick, because the hero(?) could generally be counted on to fast-think and fast-talk his way out of trouble - or if all else failed, fast-run out of town. :-D )
