  •  Totally wrong on autism (7+ / 0-)

No way, no how does autism lead to violence.  Whoever reported that is incompetent.

My best friend in high school, 40 years ago, could not look anyone in the eye.  My mother used to ask me how come -- he was over a lot, and it bothered her.  I never thought much of it.  He also used to repeat things.  He was (and is) brilliant but could not tolerate some parts of high school, like gym, and never graduated -- but he eventually got a masters' degree.  As some point in his adult life Aspergers became well known and he noted that he had it.  In fact I think his picture is in the dictionary next to it... and this guy would never harm a flea.

And I know some Aspergers kids via my own kids, who tend to be nerdy and hang with them.  Again, they are the least violent kids in town.  Sports are too violent for them. They study.  They want to achieve.  They don't dress well and the whole idea of "manners" goes over their head by a long way but they are instinctively harmless.

It sounds like young Mr. Lanza had an explosive personality disorder of some type, perhaps coupled with other autistic tendencies, or maybe he was just paranoid. But he represents Aspergers kids about as well as George W. Bush represents scholars.
