the prevailing attitude of fundamentalist Christians up until the 1980's. Maybe not the monarchist piece, but definitely that serious, committed Christians either shouldn't vote, or shouldn't give it much priority in the lives, because their sights were set on something higher. They were apolitical.

Then Reagan's crew came along and figured out that there was this large (and growing, at that time) pool of voters there for the taking, if only they could figure out how to hook them. So, a few years of "murdered babies" and "gay child molesters" later, here we are.

of Americans, something like 17% (?) think that the second coming will happen during their lifetime, and this intense motivation used to be directed at getting right with God.  Now, it's directed at getting everyone else right with God.  My hope is that they will realize that their mission is futile, that they cannot actually win here in this vale of tears, and that they will recede into the background and be as non-political as old order Mennonites.  But it is a bit freaky that one in five Americans believes in this nonsense.  I wish they would go back to preparing themselves, and leave the rest of us out of it.
