  •  Yup. Just look at all those Prepper websites (7+ / 0-)

    and TV shows and books...

    It is a booming industry.

    •  not all preppers are crazy (16+ / 0-)

I myself have 3 months worth of rice and beans stored, plus necessary backup supplies. It's just prudent for potential disasters. I do not own a gun and never would, even though I live in a relatively rural area. I am not afraid--if I were, I'd move to a different location.

The unlikely idea that roving gangs would attack your home...that's kind of childish. I don't have much that's valuable, but anyway thieves are welcome to take whatever they want. They are welcome to take my vegetarian food. I have backup supplies, I am not worried about myself.

A more likely scenario in case there was some kind of disaster, is that you and your neighbors might want to pool your supplies so everybody is adequately taken care of. See Occupy Sandy.

We have to think like a community. Not fear the "others".

I love it that Obama's channeling Harry Truman: "I don't give 'em hell; I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!"

I have 2-3 months of food available too.

Knowing what type of disaster is most likely to occur in your location and making plans is smart.

I am an IT person.  I have a very extensive disaster recovery plan that I wrote for the company where I work.

But there is a difference in preparing for normal disasters and some of these TV shows that are meant to exacerbate the fears of those who are slowly losing political power and/or believe that at some point the big govt is going to attack its citizens.  I have relatives who believe this stuff, and I am sure they are not the only ones.
