    ...it doesn't necessarily mean you suffer later in life.  Depression runs in my family, but I didn't get into that downward spiral just based on the genetics.  I was bullied and abused horribly as a kid by other kids and adults who didn't know what to do with me.  That's what set it off for me.

        Mental illness doesn't strike only in families that are in poverty or who have a history of drug abuse.
        Since the commenter's over-all point seems to be that it is genetic and therefore ubiquitous.
