Rather than live with the stigma, my parents moved to another country and I never found out what my problem was until my late 40's, when it was "OK to tell me now, because I was almost over it."  I graduated from an elite university and hold an OK job, but wasted about 20 years looking for workarounds for my invisible disability.  But my parents never had to admit having a "defective" child, validating the fears of the times about interracial marriage.
