I understand this, but at the same time I don't want my daughter's school turned into Fort Knox. That just teaches the children to fear, which is already one of the major problems I have with this the US. Compared to most European countries, the general level of fear and anxiety is so much higher. And that by itself increases the level of isolation people feel, which may well in turn make senseless acts of violence more likely.

After the shooting at Virginia Tech, the university simply made it possible to lock most classrooms from the inside (although for some reason not the large lecture hall where I teach this semester). That's a non-intrusive measure which by itself would have largely thwarted the shooter in Newtown.

I should also add that I met students and parents at the front doors this morning with my coffee in hand and gave them all the most cheerful greeting I could muster. They need to believe that, in spite of the security measures we are taking, the school is essentially the same--though in some ways everything has changed.

we not teach our children not to run into traffic?  Is that teaching them to fear and do you think it is bad?  We anticipate what can happen and try to safeguard against it.
