  •  I've heard some opponents of gun control say (24+ / 0-)

things like "Gun control will never work because there are too many guns." But there are many things that could be done that would gradually reduce the number of guns available in the US.

Many of the guns confiscated by police departments end up eventually being resold. In order to reduce the overall number of guns available in the country, police departments could instead destroy confiscated guns.

Put limits on the number of new firearms that can be manufactured and sold to civilians each year.

Ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines--and set up a buy-back program that allows owners of these weapons to turn these in.

Require all firearms to be registered, and make all unregistered firearms subject to confiscation if caught with them.

All of these steps would eventually bring the number of guns in this country down to a saner level.

fix.  Nothing will change overnight, but over time, with the right policies, the number of firearms can be reduced and the spread of assault weapons can be halted.

Even cut off the sale of assault weapon ammunition.  Let people use up what they got -- some reportedly have many thousands of rounds stored up.  And then no more.

They can have all the assault weapons they want, just no more ammo.  Over several years, that would work.
