help of my teen-aged niece (with compensation). She learned a lot about human nature.

Shopper 1: "$2 for this vest? I'll give you $1"
Me: "It's barely used, and it's reversible. It's like getting two vests. Consider it $1 per vest. It's $2, like all the pther clothes on the rack"
Shopper 1: confers with her friend... "hmmm... that makes sense I guess. OK, I'll take it for $2."

Shopper 2: "All I have with me is $3.50.
Me: "Then I guess you're out of luck unless you want one of the items in this bin."

Shopper 3: looking at some chicken wire and other materials I had for sale. "I could use this in my craft workshops at [local charitable organization]"
Me: "That's terrific. Just take it! Anything else you see here that would be useful for your group?"
Shopper 3: "Oh my gosh, how nice of you"
Me: "No problem - how about these [other items]"?
Niece helps Shopper 3 load a bunch of free stuff into her car.

For extra effect, this transaction was done while Shopper 1 and Shopper 2 were still around to witness.

Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
