    narrative without understanding that it's fantasy. It's probably more Rambo or Mad Max and other movies than actual history, though that's not to say a highly selective version of history doesn't play a role as well.

    At one level, identifying with the heroes of stories is perfectly normal. It's just that most of us leave the theater and close the book and that identification starts fading pretty quickly.

    Althought is seems much more common on the far right, I have a similar reaction when I hear people on the far left longing for a revolution. I think to myself, "Great, a lot of people will die and then we'll have a power vacuum and who knows what kind of government will emerge."

    Those of us who really want to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good can do plenty of more banal things.
