      in modern parlance... assault weapons are weapons of mass destruction. The evidence is quite clear on that.

        original discussions on the 5.56NATO round in the qualification documents.

        I can't quote them, of course, but there was a lengthy deliberation on changing from the standard 7.62 round (.308) to the 5.56.

        The fact was noted that a wounded warrior takes more enemy combatants out of action than a dead enemy.  The 5.56 round met that objective better than a .308.
