My mother used that expression "Your rights end where my nose begins" often as I was growing up. She used them to stop sibling fisticuffs and simple squabbles over who got the last piece of pie. She used them to help us understand the duties of responsible citizens in a civilized society.

It seems the notion of unfettered rights applies almost exclusively when the subject of guns arises. And I agree with Ken, it's time to stop that nonsense and call out those who use it for what they are - irresponsible, uncivilized, and a pox on our future.

An injustice to one is an injustice to all.

      ... you are trespassing.

According to strict Libertarian philosophy, my remedy to that trespass is to pull out my gun and shoot you.

But in civilized culture, we have a invented a better, novel idea. It's called: respect.

IMHO, if you respect me, you won't go all the way out to the limits of your rights. Just because you have a right doesn't mean your push right up to the tip of my nose. And just because you may have a right doesn't mean you'll put things into our common environment that could well go into my nose and lungs and sinuses. So you'll refrain from bringing your chemicals and toxins and allergens into our common space; you'll keep your  cigarettes and dogs and cats and wool and perfumes and formaldehyde and agent orange and gunpowder in your own private places, or you'll mature out of the need for those things and come back and join me considerately and sensitively in our renewed convivial commons.

Today we have bountiful reminders of why mutual respect is the path back to sanity.

In other words, if you're a mensch, you won't be swinging your arms anywhere near my nose.
