If Obama agrees to cuts in Social Security benefits, the Republicans will use that against the Democrats in 2014.  They'll scream, "The Democrats cut your Social Security!"  And seniors will believe them, because it will be partially true.

Of course, the Republicans were the ones pushing for those cuts, but those kinds of details tend to get lost in the heat of a campaign.  Look at the hay the Republicans made out of the entirely imaginary "cuts" Obama made to Medicare.

As you've pointed out elsewhere, Laurence, cutting Social Security isn't just bad policy; it's extremely stupid politics.

      •  Deja vu? Puristes agian reacting to media reports (0+ / 0-)

The negotiations between the President and the R's is still under way and yet we have nearly half of the responders to this diary ready to drop the President because they feel he's not doing enough for them. Had the Dems not defected in the 2010 election the gerrymandering that has put the House out of reach would not have happened.
The President is looking like the adult in the room and as long as he does, the R's are going to be increasingly seen as the duplicitous surrogates for the wealthy that they are.
Keep your opinions on the President's efforts in perspective, please, and remember; the President is on our side, he is now, and always has been. He just happens to be in the spot that makes the decisions, across the table from jackals, worm tongues and charlatans. Those decisions would be a lot easier if his own side didn't over react in the opposite direction of the GOP.

Democrats will not have been alone in cutting Social Security benefits.  The Republicans will certainly vote for any cuts to a program they absolutely despise.  So the responsibility will be shared, but I can pretty much guarantee that Demcrats will get the blame.

I think the house will. If Obama agrees to this, then they need to desert him. Because he will have screwed all of us. And put a fork in Biden.  He's done. Can you say Madam President Clinton?
