      In part, that is because the definition of war crimes is too  sweeping to encompass what a soldier experiences in combat.

      My own father, talked to me a lot about war. He was a decorated hero of WWII. He told me about one particular firefight toward the very end of the war, during which a German machine gunner killed his best friend and then attempted to surrender after he ran out of ammunition, seconds later. My father responded by putting several rounds into the German's chest.

      My dad was haunted by it, but he couldn't imagine doing anything else.
