The first Duke Nukem was a platform side-scroller made by ID that was similar in gameplay to Commander Keen. I would love a 3D platformer in the style of the original, but it's never going to happen.

The problem really is parents. Basically every commercial game for nearly two decades has been given a rating by the ESRB. Those ratings, just like movie ratings and TV show ratings, don't do anything by themselves other than inform. Just like parents need to actually set the V-chip in their TV for it to work, consoles these days come with a whole slew of parental controls for both games and movies. It's not as good as actually paying attention to your kid but at least it sets some boundaries. And unless kids have a heck of a lot more money than I did when I was playing a shareware copy of Doom, who's paying for these $30 to $60 games, XBox Live accounts, and consoles anyway?
