they called in the FP. It was the end of freedom.
The only way to defeat them is to ignore them. We must rule.

    •  Well, when it takes an accumulation... (13+ / 0-)

...of something like 50 or 60 HR's to trigger autoban, it just seems like 5 donuts every 24 hours isn't enough. Just an empirical observation on my part.

of experience over there, I found that trolls thrive on response like rats on cheese.
My only rec would be to spread the word not to respond. Resist the emotion and concentrate on the work at hand.
Once the FP comes in everything changes, and, believe me, we are well, well, off.

      •  Multiple occurences (6+ / 0-)

Within a short period of time, or in periods of time that are particularly susceptible to trolls (pie wars/elections/etc.) always make me wish I had more than five.

Normally, I rarely use them, as it should be.

      •  2 HR's each in 2 comments in different diaries (1+ / 0-)

I'm not familiar with the rules implemented in the algorithm used for triggering troll alerts and autoban. The developers and staff know this stuff, but the precise rules are not made public for obvious reasons. If a troll knows the rules, then the troll can find ways around the autoban, for example.

Piling on with HR's isn't all that useful once a comment has at least 2 HR's. If the comment has been uprated, the rules are a little different, but I wouldn't know what effect that has. The algorithm is definitely very complicated. It has to be.

Iirc, a troll needs to have multiple comments HR'd and it helps if at least two HR'd comments are in different diaries. This wakes up the autoban and/or admin troll alerts. TU's can view the hidden comments and the hidden comment history as well.

50 or 60 HR's on one comment isn't helpful. Two donuts in enough to trigger the algorithm. Don't waste your donuts by piling on.

The autoban mechanism is one of the ways that a troll gets banned.  Those with appropriate admin authority can manually ban a user. There is also some sort of an alert or tag mechanism that identifies behavior that doesn't quite trigger an autoban but identifies behavior for an admin manual review.

You can also send a note to the admins, but this shouldn't be necessary in most cases. Toss donuts first. This also alerts the admins. Understand that admin folks are busy and aren't necessarily available during off-hours.

I'm really pleased that the staff is attentive to trolling activity. It has improved the civility on this site immensely. Fewer good contributors have been bullied to leave DKos. That's the whole point of banning the trolls. So thanks, DKos staff.

It's a rare event that was as horrible as the troll we saw today. That troll went way beyond the worst of the Saturday hate mail.

    •  In most diaries, you can ignore them. (11+ / 0-)

In this case, the troll knew exactly what they were doing - going to the one diary that could reasonably be expected to be read by outsiders and spamming it with repulsive obscenities.  Because of the nature of those diaries, it has to be hidden.  It was Westboro Church behavior.

        WBC behavior.

And I had just gotten done reading that article on the Phelps/church history, too.

unlike a decade ago and is also on its way to becoming mythic it seems as it appears to be the place where Libruls come to get their marching orders.

I guess we have to expect more newbies, FNGs and others including trolls as the site continues to grow, which means that there will be more such comments as well as comments made without considering the diarist's history
