That the president put this suggestion out to give Democrats something to loudly oppose: Cuts to Social Security. I was gratified to see so many Democrats do just that this morning.

He truly considers himself President of "All Americans".  So the fact that some 47% of Americans wake up every morning gnashing their teeth about deficits and spending, etc., is something he takes seriously.  He doesn't just see those people as "the enemy".

By "offering" some degree of "compromise" on this issue that is of such overwhelming concern to such a large chunk of the population, he is indeed trying to cut a deal.  But of course he would fully anticipate and welcome the blowback from Democrats.  This makes his "offer" that much more clearly a kind of sacrifice, just as Repubs giving in on tax hikes requires taking major heat from their base.

In the end, the only real outcome that matters from this gambit is how it affects the electorate in 2014 and beyond.  Anything done today can be changed by a Dem majority congress; anything that leads to a Republican takeover would be a bigger disaster than anything.  I don't know if the President's strategy will be effective, but I'm very confident that he knows what he's doing.
