  •  I hear you, but... (10+ / 0-)

Should we give up movies that contain violent scenes?

Should we stop reading books that contain, in graphic detail, the murder of innocent people?

Should we ban music that contains offensive, violent lyrics?

Hate to use the cliche, but that's one heck of a "slippery slope".

Let's focus on this.  If real-life assault weapons aren't available to folks with extreme aggression, well, there's much less they can do to commit massive acts of violence.

    Let's target the real problem.

P.S.  Loved the Atari 2600 when I was growing up.  Really enjoyed "Combat", "Outlaw" and "Missile Command", among many others.  They didn't make me want to go out and shoot people.

It's not the games.  It's the guns.

    •  Just because it's difficult to draw the lines (0+ / 0-)

doesn't mean we need to start somewhere to make things better.

Let's start with banning assault rifles, high-capacity clips, and games glorifying behaviors resembling massacres.

      •  Other modern countries have violent video games. (4+ / 0-)

Yet we are astronomically ahead of them in terms of people killed by guns.

Can you produce a credible study that shows a clear causative link between violent video games and real-life violence?  Because if not, it's the same thing as saying the patient has tonsilitis, so let's remove his appendix.

You don't have to like video games that glorify violence.  I'm not crazy about them myself these days, and I never really got into the "first-person shooter" games.  But unless it can be shown that this is a genuine cause of real-life violence, there's no point in banning them.  It's a feel-good action that solves nothing.
