  •  I am utterly atypical. (18+ / 0-)

I am female, 41, with a nice settled marriage and a couple of kids, a lot of hobbies...

One of which is playing video games.

I think because when I'm doing a scenario in Starcraft or a quest in Diablo II (I don't have the newer ones, poverty sucks) the goal is obvious, it's achievable, and hard work always pays off.

Remember what I said about poverty. My daily life is frequently just the opposite, and so the gaming is a nice release. And also, all you have to do by and large in Diablo, especially, is just kill things. You don't have to negotiate, balance, plan, budget, conciliate and submit. This is also nice. But I will say that I favor a character that freezes opponents when they are killed, so they shatter and melt and don't leave bloody corpses. Horror's never been my thing.

Of course, I have a life outside the game, including supervising my sons' gaming. Currently we have the problem that the games the seventeen year old can handle playing are not the games the thirteen year old is mature enough to play, in several ways, and this is a highly unpopular ruling. And I have forbidden playing the game in question when Little Brother is home and around, because that's not appropriate and unfair. So now they're both mad at me. I guess I'm doing it right. (grin)

When you come to find how essential the comfort of a well-kept home is to the bodily strength and good conditions, to a sound mind and spirit, and useful days, you will reverence the good housekeeper as I do above artist or poet, beauty or genius.

    •  Way to go (7+ / 0-)

I'm two years older than my sister, and I remember when we were teenagers, I got to do some things and see some thing she couldn't.  Nothing to do with gender, everything to do with maturity and age.  My parents were pretty smart that way.

Your kids will be mad at you now.  They'll thank you, or at least silently appreciate it, later.  Keep on keeping on...

      332 - 206. Not a mandate, my ass.

    •  I am your male counterpart. Rec for you! (6+ / 0-)

Also, Diablo 3 is a disgusting marketing ploy that is barely playable because Blizzard just threw together a cheap World of Warcraft skin onto clunky code as their Trojan Horse for the real point of Diablo 3: the Real Money Auction House.

That's right; you find things in Diablo 3 and sell them for real money. And Blizzard gets a cut.

I was so bitterly disappointed in Diablo 3 that I nearly voiced it aloud in the presence my wife, who bought it for me as a Father's Day gift, after hearing me exclaim with great excitement that it had finally come out. But I'd rather she have the satisfaction of having chosen the perfect gift.

Blizzard and Bethesda. What is it with the B companies?

The problem with going with your gut as opposed to your head is that the former is so often full of shit. - Randy Chestnut
