People have all sorts of funny phrasings. But I think that was a revealing moment and squares with what relatively little I know about his feelings on this matter.
Why -- after almost four years in office and two presidential campaigns -- do we still not know what Obama's positions on things are?

Why are we still wondering who the real person is?  Why, even among his voters, do we not know if he is a secret liberal ... or a secret Blue Dog ... or a secret conservative ... or a social liberal and fiscal conservative ... or social conservative and fiscal conservative ... or a secret corporatist ... or ...

Why do we not know if his actions are a sign of eleventy dimensional chess ... or a straightforward sign of his true beliefs ... or a purposeful lie ... or a genuinely meant good intention, but with lousy negotiating skill ...

Why all this ambiguity?  That in itself would seem to be a warning bell of some sort ... be we don't even know enough to know of what.

As a person he is a blank -- something that everyone projects their own images of him on to -- without his ever actually telling us who he really is.
