Personally, this is what I expected to happen.  It's fully consistent with his past behavior.  I voted for him knowing this.  Who knows what radical scheme Romney would have tried to do and what kind of bipartisan "gang" would have emerged in the Senate to pass it?

If past is prologue, the endgame here is: as much gets kicked down the road as possible. Which is really not good for the nation. But it's been the MO of Obama from day one.  And it's fully consistent with the mindset of most bureaucrats that one tries to rock the boat as little as possible.

As an ex-bureaucrat, I've seen what happens to those that do rock the boat--they get shunned.  As an outsider who got in, Obama is powerfully afraid of being shunned.  The last thing he wants is to be a perceived as a naive or idealistic ex-president that people joke about like Jimmy Carter.  He wants to be a Bill Clinton without the embarrassing peccadilloes.

We were all elated that Obama won the election.  But expecting on the basis of that good feeling that the president would somehow morph from a conciliator to a fighter was not realistic IMHO.  i know we saw him fight some on the campaign trail, but that was to win the election.  Now he never has to win another election.  He only has to win the trust of the philanthropists who will donate to the Barack Obama Foundation for Hope and Change.
