    I told my 9 and 7 year old that if they heard about a scary thing at school, they should know that they are safe, and that the bad man is gone. I also said that if they had questions we could talk about it at home. And that's it.

    I think kids tell you when they're ready or needing to know more, and if they don't, I can't think of any way that talking to them about it would help them.

    I'm not questioning anyone who chose to do the opposite. I think you know your kids best, and the diarist's son sounds like an extraordinary young man, full of empathy and wisdom.

    I just think there is a case to be made for not talking. As someone who has felt absolutely leaden with grief for days, I've had to remove myself from much of the media even to function.
