And the number 1 rule in negotiation is that you must be willing to walk away from the table.

The number 2 rule is that you state you position and you make the other guy come to you.  You don't start with your position and then guess what is 'half-way' and move to that.

What other table can we sit down at as an alternative?

Besides, only those who negotiate in bad faith are unwilling to move towards the other side.

      •  Despite the media's proclamations, the failure to (3+ / 0-)

do something will not ruin anything.  Taxes go up for everyone, and unemployment ends for some people.  It will suck, but it will also put pressure on the Republicans to move.  Democrats don't need to give when they have already given too much.  Republicans created the mess, Republicans continue the mess and for once they should be forced to own the mess instead of Democrats attempting to save them from themselves.

The entire situation can be fixed without cuts to social services.  Raise taxes on the uberwealthy, not just income taxes above the Clinton rates, but also bring capital gains on par with income.  Lower the medicare age allowing younger people to buy in, and allow medicare to negotiate drug prices.  Medicaid is a safety net and if you have too many people in the safety net, you find where they are falling from and fix it so it won't happen.  In the case of medicaid, the hole is the healthcare system which is too expensive, allowing a medicare buy in will help, but increasing minimum wage will also help since you will decrease the amount of people living in poverty thereby decreasing the amount of medicaid users.

If you want to cut government spending, start by streamlining the military and homeland security by combining and eliminating agencies, including consolidating the intelligence agencies of which there are currently at least 16.

        •  I am absolutely in favor of every item (4+ / 0-)

          you mentioned.

However, you haven't offered a strategy to get those items past the house. Having clear, quality goals is fine, but elections have consequences and we lost the house. What's the strategy to get those items past the Republicans?

          •  You don't get them through the House. (0+ / 0-)

That is the point.  You go to the American people, you explain what needs to be done and who is blocking it.  You make the Republicans own the failure.  Republicans will never agree to anything sane or rational and the majority of Americans will not see that if Democrats keep caving.
