With the exception of climate change (on which we will unfortunately see no action from either Democrats or Republicans), there are no issues more politically salient, no issues with more long-term importance, than the economic ones.  The reason is simple:  so many of our social problems stem from the fact that the buying (and saving) power of the public has regressed to the point that most people are either treading water, or already under it.

I joined the fight to end the ban on gay people in the military in 1988, years before DADT even became policy.  But I was pissed that Congress passed its repeal in 2010 while leaving the Bush tax cuts intact.  The damage those tax cuts have done to our economy is incalculable.  I would have been happy to wait a few more years for the end of DADT if we could have instead had a nation with sound finances.

Shirley Chisholm was right. Our Republic is in deep trouble.
