  •  You know, I've noticed that a lot of Prius drivers (9+ / 0-)

    are agressive and speed.

So who do you think swears more? Subaru drivers or Prius drivers?

    •  I think the Prius drivers are more given to (7+ / 0-)

      'drats' than 'fucks'.

We don't speed so much but rather indulge in a little electric motor induced acceleration once in a while.

But the little energy efficiency game display makes us immediately feel guilty about it.

In Salt Lake City we don't cuss much, we drive by a lot of parking meters all the time and smile because we get free parking for one full meter's run time. Not sure to who to thank for that, Rocky Anderson?

    •  I dunno. (7+ / 0-)

My brother (a self-proclaimed "Libertarian," but I doubt he could even define "Libertarian") owns a Prius and a Subaru, and he tailgates like a maniac in both cars. He speeds, too.

Frankly, he scares the hell out of me. So, I'm doing most of the swearing.

    •  I drive an electric car powered by solar (4+ / 0-)

Which means I can go fast or I can go far, but not both. So I tool along at 57 in the right lane.  Then when I am driving too far for an EV, I get in the motherfucking minivan and haul ass at 76.

It's always fun to switch vehicles and remember if I get to cuss or not.

And fuck yeah on solar even if diarist doesn't agree.

      •  he didn't say solar wasn't good, just we're (3+ / 0-)

not using solar OR wind to replace hydrocarbon fuels.
He's right about that, too, and that's a big fuckin' deal, especially for places like India and China where the numbers of cars are growing like crazy and environmental regulations already don't matter.

Fast enough. And China is an issue because their electrical plants are mostly coal-fired.  But look, buildings need roofs. Putting solar panels on them as long as they aren't in shade is a no-brainer.

          •  so we need MORE solar, and MORE wind, and (0+ / 0-)

MORE hydropower, and we need FUSION too.

The thing is, we're not going to dial back human greed.

We're not going to make people happily go back to conditions that are not optimal for their comfort and function. I do not want to weave straw into sandals and live in an adobe house with unglazed windows and cook over a fire in a hole in the floor. That's just a fact.

            I bet you don't either.

In Africa people don't even have that level of comfort, and in some parts of Asia and South America the indoor cooking methods are as hard on the lungs of families as second-hand smoke in the USA ever was.

Tomorrow needs to be better than yesterday. Just because we haven't replaced the hydrocarbons YET doesn't mean we don't NEED to -- and based on most sensible projections of remaining accessible resources, we're about 30 to 40 years BEHIND the power curve in doing so ...

and we have to find ways to do this that don't, via the law of unintended consequences, make things worse. People jumped on the gasoline-powered internal-combustion horseless carriage so street sweepers wouldn't have to deal with literal tons of horse manure in urban areas on a daily basis ... and we've got a hole in the ozone, coal plants in China, and global warming instead of all that horsecrap on the streets.

Not to mention all the rest of the horsecrap in politics.
