the craft of storytelling goes.  Bigelow is a truly gifted director.  And Jessica Chastain was EXCELLENT in her role.

And yet.  The movie does suggest that the end of torture justifies its means because it coughed up a few ingredients that led to Bin Laden's location.

Thanks Jesselyn -- this would be troublesome enough if it were flat out true.  But it's not true at all.  I agree, wanting a stronger disclaimer on the front of the film.

It will be a contender for Oscar (Best Picture, Best Director) and may even win one or both.  I hope that if it does, enough of us speak up.

Then Bigelow must not have been involved in preparing the trailer that I saw before watching Lincoln a few weeks ago.

It was quite possibly the worst, most disjointed trailer I have ever seen.  I hadn't heard of the film before then, so I didn't know what it was supposed to be about.  The trailer didn't help, except to provide enough seemingly random snippets that all I could tell is that it had to do with Iraq or Afghanistan, that it involves intelligence operatives of some kind, that there's supposed to be lots yelling and tension, and, well, that's about it.

I remember turning to my wife and mentioning about how crappy that trailer was, and if it was supposed to make me want to see the film, it failed on all counts.

Reading this diary just reinforces that conclusion.

      •  I know what you mean - much better trailer (0+ / 0-)

came out last week - can watch on YouTube

(link), it came in 3rd in the prestigious Indiewire poll, and it was award Best Picture by the National Board of Review, and the critics in Boston and New York.  It's probably going to pick up a few more once the official awards season rolls around.

I'm holding out until I see it.  Everything I've heard outside of the political realm has said that the film is much more equivocal, but ... You can't exactly be equivocal about torture, so... I'm going to see it for myself.

I'd also note that Andrew Sullivan, who is quoted in the diary as having "reached the same conclusion", most emphatically did not.  His criticisms of the film came before he saw it.  Now that he's seen it, his opinion has flipped entirely.   Make of that what you will.

    •  Birth of a Nation was hugely innovative filmaking (5+ / 0-)

from a technical point of view.
