    Several years ago, a company (I forget the details, somebody help me here) launched an ad campaign stating "Our customers come second ... our employees come first"! There was some separation between the two halves of the slogan for dramatic effect. The message beneath the campaign was that the customers would be dealing with happy and motivated employees that would delight us with service and attention. My recollection is that the campaign was successful.

    The consequences of the Darden approach are obvious: higher server turnover, untrained employees alienating repeat customers, disenchanted servers telegraphing warnings to new customers about the service they should expect. Their public pronouncements about how happy their happy people are a stark contrast to their latest quarterly report.

    Why do you need to motivate your employees? Didn't you hire motivated people?
