    traveled for the holidays for 25+ years and then simply stopped. Now my immediate family gives the gift of time - we're gathering to make Grandma's bourbon balls recipe this afternoon - and no gifts.

    But we do the sparkly winter lights - lit from Nov-March -  food, friends & alcohol. Always in demand is my recipe for Schnockers, wickedly alcoholic companion to eggnog, coffee or coke for that matter:

    2 cups bourbon
    1 cup dark rum
    1 cup brandy
    1 soft vanilla bean
    1 whole allspice (crushed, use a hammer)
    2 large sticks of cinnamon
    7 whole cloves

    Use cheap brands of alcohol because you can't tell the difference after you add the spices. Put it all in a bottle and let it sit in a cool dark place for a week or so. Lovingly turn it every now and then. Strain it into a clean bottle & put a sparkly bow on it. Tightly capped it will last at least a year if you happen to forget you've got it around, less if you remember.
