  •  Were people amazed 11 states left Union in 1861? (11+ / 0-)

Why would people be amazed now?  What is there that the Teahadists have said or done since 1/20/09 that caused one to expect them to act any differently?  What is there about the party of Limbaugh, Palin, Cain, Bachmann, Perry, Ryan, and Cantor that causes surprise now?

We're talking about a party in which Newt Gingrich is a relative moderate.  It's a party in which Mitt Romney clearly towered over the rest of the presidential field, and it's a party in which a snake oil salesman like Ryan is considered to be a "wonk."  Being surprised by yesterday's events on the Hill is like being surprised by yesterday's blizzard in the Midwest.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?

Was more of a surprise.  I heard it had been something like 250 days since Wisconsin had measurable snow.  The GOP cannot go 250 seconds without saying or doing something batshit crazy.

in the Midwest this last year, how can anyone be surprised what a cornered and threatened Republican party will do to survive?

They have always been this way - and worse maybe under 'Dubya, but with no press outlets, social media and few major progressive websites to expose it until the last few years or so.

As someone born in the union heartland and living in many deep red states, these guys are pretty "mainstream" in some places - sadly not surprised.

If not us ... who? If not here ... where? If not now ... when?

      Even when it's entirely undeserved.

There's a certain sentiment that you cannot have strong negative opinions about a person or group without that reflecting something deeper and negative about yourself.

These people try to rationalize away the worst of what Republicans do (so as to maintain their own belief that they are good people if they don't outright seethe with hatred at anyone) up until they hit their breaking point. The "amazement" is when they realize "Yes, in fact, they are the stereotypes they portray themselves as and no it was never an act for these Freshmen.

That's actually probably a surprise for Washington, who might be used to some crazy but only part-time crazy for show and not full-time True Believers just saying what they actually mean.
