  •  I guess I differ because I live in a big city (0+ / 0-)

I see cops all over the place every day.  I don't view it as a, "oh no I'm at risk!" thing but rather either an annoyance when I'm driving or a good thing when I'm at work and there are off duty police acting as security guards.

Also, I don't really know what the NRA are proposing, because security guards that are not active duty police officers are a bad idea I think.  What I'd like are real cops that maybe get moved around so we don't end up with bored psycho cops like what happened with OWS in Berkeley.  I want cops guarding the schools that are neither gung-ho nor cowardly.

I don't agree with you on the fundamental premise.  I don't think armed cops need to watch over elementary schools.  I don't think that makes the children safer.  And I do think it teaches the wrong lesson in many places.

But let's set that aside for a moment.

You want a active-duty police officer in every school.  You want them to be brave enough that they'd engage a hostile shooter in a live-fire situation, but not so enamored of their authority that they'd act hastily or abuse their position at the expense of students.

There are over 90,000 public schools.  Can you find those 90,000 cops?  If you pull them out of the current active police force, that's 90,000 less police on the beat, and the rest of our streets will be less safe for it.  If we're throwing money at this problem, you could hire and train, but there's still no guarantee you'll get that many Goldilocks cops -- neither too soft or too hard but just right.

      •  I admit I don't know the logistics (0+ / 0-)

However, I see too many police whose jobs are only to pull over drivers to write tickets (for example, what public good can motorcycle cops do?)  Also, we have high unemployment, so some small percentage of the unemployed could probably be trained.  I also think tax dollars should go up to cover this since it is adding overhead to an already beyond strained budget.
