  •  the weakness of LEDs is the electronics (5+ / 0-)

    just as it is for fluorescents.

    there's one extremely important difference.

    you have to generate a really high voltage to get a fluorescent started, and the "sustaining" voltage is also quite high which severely stresses the electronics.

    LEDs do not have this problem which is why they are going to be much more reliable.

    now if we can just get houses wires with DC as well as AC, we're all set for a more efficient future.

      I would be most happy to hear from you. Right now, heat dissipation from the boards is a problem for our production products.

        but you know - when heat dissipation is a problem, that means you need more and better heatsinks :-)  that means:

        1 more metal, well some sort of heat conductor
        2 possibly air flow (althoug you really don't want a fan)

        air flow makes a huge difference in any sort of thermal problem.  however - attaching a fan to your LED light bulb is highly undesirable :-)

        generally the problem is density.  if you have 4 3W LEDs in 2 square inches, which is pretty easy to do, you have to dissipate 12W.

        this becomes problematic if you have something like a light bulb in a cannister fixture and there's no where for the heat to go.

        that's why you see big hunks of metal on LED light bulbs.

        so, heat's an issue, and you have to design appropriately for the end use.

          of the work we do. Dissipating the heat they produce is a major design concern. I'd love to stay in contact with you, your advice is truly appreciated.
