  •  Forbes: "'The NRA Industrial Complex'-Why... (6+ / 0-)

...can’t America keep murder weapons out of the hands of these lunatics? (emphasis mine)

The answer: the NRA Industrial Complex.

The Forbes article, written shortly after Aurora, also explains how there's just so much money involved in the manufacture and sale of guns and ammo that the manufacturers, their lobby/PR people (the NRA), and their bought an paid-for politicians will fight will all they've go to prevent any limitations on their profits.

...Ruger and Glock guns are a common element in a string of recent massacres...

Each time we have one of these mass murders, the shooters get enormous publicity...But the makers of weapons... seem to benefit...The NRAhas been scaring gun owners about the imminent threat to their arsenals ever since President Obama took office. The NRA’s tactics have contributed to industry growth...

And that growth has been impressive...Not surprisingly, this growth is great news for shareholders of America’s biggest gun manufacturers. Since 2010, Ruger and Smith & Wesson – our two biggest publicly traded gun makers – have enjoyed a 150% rise in stock market value. In May, Ruger’s first quarter earnings more than doubledand it temporarily stopped taking new orders since first quarter 2012 order had exceeded those for all of 2011...

The author, Peter Cohan, asks the question that the Gun manufacturers, the NRA & the tame politicians won't ever honestly answer, but their actions have already answered:
...It comes down to what America values. Do we value the lives of innocent people at movie theaters, malls, and schools?...

Or do we want to make sure that a handful of gun industry executives and shareholders continue to enjoy market-beating profits?...

Instead they come up with the crackpot solution:  Arm everyone.  Except that they don't want to admit how this could possibly go wrong:

...But consider what would happen if everyone in a dark movie theater with 300 people had a gun and could use it when Holmes threw the tear gas in....It could lead to everyone shooting at everyone else...
Ya think?  If you're halfway sane, and not eaten up with greed and or mindless fear, you allow for the very real possibility that a whole bunch of armed civilians in a crowded situation could lead to mass confusion and unintended deaths.  But for those personally profiting from the sales of guns--apparently it's a price that they are more than willing to unapologetically pay.
