  •  This worries me personally (11+ / 0-)

I've been involved in an Occupy group, and in my region, the Pacific Northwest, people have been arrested due to having anarchist material in their homes, as if that alone makes them suspect as complicit in some window breaking that occurred by a small minority of individuals. The security state thinks in black and white, absolutist, authoritarian terms, so they project that tendency on groups they monitor. So if one kid who calls himself an anarchist breaks a window, then, well, of course, all anarchists are the same so let's go after anyone with a few anarchist books on their shelves.

I happen to love anarchist ideals and theory. Based on the principle of mutual aid, it is a wonderful vision of a better way to organize ourselves as a community. That doesn't make me violent, and in fact the majority of anarchists are far less violent than, say, the modern day Democratic party which supports activities accused of being war crimes (drone bombing of funerals and first responders, among other activities, such as torture, rendition, etc).

The period of violence against a few notorious corrupt capitalists lasted only about 20 years in the anarchist movement (between 1880 and 1900, if I recall correctly), with some exceptions here and there, and other incidences were either wrongly attributed to anarchists or were minor property damage, or in some cases were initiated by the police themselves.

The problem is that most violence comes from the state, especially capitalist states, against anyone whom they see as a threat to capitalism. Hence the violence from the state against Occupy protesters. This is why our country props up right wing fascist dictators, while often trying to undermine any left wing movement, such as what occurred in Vietnam, or more recently what was done in Venezuela. Capitalist corporations often can't wait to do business in fascist countries.

The security state is a threat to the freedom of every citizen.
