  •  Overly complex explanation (9+ / 0-)

Joseph Smith was a horny con man who wanted a theological excuse for having multiple teenage sex partners.

Much of the Book of Mormon is recycled Old Testament, delivered inexplicably in the stilted King James English that was so useful in heaven.  The effect of the "theology" was that men could have multiple wives, which was popular with the men, and no one cared whether it was popular with the women.

You win multiple partners for life, unless you wish to trade them for what is behind door 2, of course.

      Beware even numbers....

played a big part. Sexy guy.

The overall story had more to do with alcoholism at that period of history. The 1830s produced any number of desexed males, wasted by early alcohol poisoning.

Then after the Civil War there were 500,000 extra widows and unmarried women. Sharing a husband beat out having no one, at least  for the ones who went out to Utah and other Mormon communities. That's when Mormonism with polygamy took off.
