LDS can be excommunicated for serious sins, such as adultery, murder or participating in an abortion, or for preaching false doctrine, so-called. While violating the Word of Wisdom--their name for the commandment enjoining against alcohol, tobacco, and "hot drinks" (interpreted as coffee and tea) is a fairly significant violation, it is not worthy of excommunication. The more serious offence is, that if he has a temple recommend (permission to go to an LDS temple and perform "ordinances") he has told both his bishop and his stake president that he does not use alcohol--he lied to them. THAT is a serious offence. Most members would be disciplined to some degree, but if he expresses regret and commits to not to it again, he will certainly not be excommunicated.

No one in this world has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. H. L. Mencken
