    And I don't choose to grow in containers at the present time.  Someday though, when I downsize, I will again.

    •  we used to sterilize our tobacco beds in the (6+ / 0-)

      days before herbicides and fungicides by cutting brush and cotton stalks and burning them on the prepared beds.  The heat killed weed seed and spores while the ash worked as a fertilizer and soil amendment.  The trick is to get a uniform burn hot enough to kill pathogens 6" down or more and then to not disturb the soil which would turn up more pathogens.  Instead of planting the tobacco seed, we would roll the beds to have seed to soil contact

        I have heard using a cultivator around plants for weed control can actually stir up more weed seeds.

          roller (big cylinder tank with a pull handle you could fill w/ water to vary the weight) so you press the seeds into the soil w/0 disturbing the soil.  People used to "roll" seeds regularly instead of planting them as they do now
