    what irks me more than the use of it's as the possessive pronoun is its'. You wouldn't believe how many manuscripts I've received where the authors have used the nonexistent its'. What are they thinking? I imagine the mental conversation thus: "It can't be it's, because that's the contraction for 'that is,' but it is a possessive, so there's got to be an apostrophe somewhere."
