Perhaps your son's father was also your sweetheart, whether or not you remained together.  It's hard, and I hope he had some good days before he passed.

My grandmother also died of a brain tumor.  She was religious, and toward the end, she hallucinated quite vividly that the devil was coming for her, literally sinking his claws and teeth into her for every bad thing she'd ever done or thought.  It was right out of Heironymous Bosch.  It's been thirty years, but I still feel anger at those who preach this nonsense about hell and use suffering and regret and guilt to fill pews and collection baskets. Someone like Mike Huckabee can sound as reasonable as he wants on the Daily Show, but I can smell the poison in his words and I can see his profile in one of those paintings. My little secular prayer when thinking about brain tumors is that may we all walk on this good earth freely, without fear.

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.” Charles Darwin
