  •  Maybe, but, (3+ / 0-)

he doesn't say "the needle" he says "a needle" at least in my Bible.  This might be nit-picking, but to paraphrase a junde I was once before (as counsel not client) I pretty sure He chose his words specifically. My mother's point was that a small camel might make it through the gate and thus a rich man might make it into heaven. Playing a strict constructionist here, use of the general term would infer a sewing tool.  Use of a specific might allow for her interpretation.

Translation requires a deft hand and a deep understanding of both languages - and monolinguists have no idea what is involved. Word substitution is NOT translation.

          •  Yeah, but FACTS are not the substance here: (0+ / 0-)

The most consistently troublesome / ignorant of the "christian" base DO, in fact believe that the translations / translators (yes, ALL of them) are inerrantly inspired by God, just like they believe God is the original author of each of the included texts (yes, even the later forgeries!).

I mean, hey - can it be God's will to have his meaning lost in translation noise? (so say the inerrancy crowd)

The point is that NO doesn't clear the channel:  They truly do believe that there ARE and CAN BE no mis-translations, that God intended them to believe the exact nonsense they swallow, *and they aren't going to let you fool them into falling for the devil's line".

And if you think that's impenetrably lunacy, well, that's what your reason, facts, and universal experience are gonna have to drill thru...(and yes, lunacy).

I still think ridicule may be the best weapon there....

I don't personally feel mockery is always the best answer.

              YMMV.
