  •  Yes, you have to ignore his core message (4+ / 0-)

to believe he would have countenanced Capitalism for one second. As he allegedly said, "You can't serve God and Money".

I never liked you and I always will.

    •  Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 (6+ / 0-)

"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Rightwing alleged Christians only believe in Jesus as something to check off their list--they allegedly believe to have eternal life.  Then they can go on merrily and destroy peoples and nations with disregard to Biblical teachings.  But, they are only fooling themselves.

      •  Also "many who are first will be (5+ / 0-)

last, and the last first,” mentioned in most (all?) of the Gospels and the more direct "whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave"  There's just nothing there about storing up treasure or attaining high position.

        sigh...

        The truth always matters.

      •  Yes, right-wingers cherry-pick scripture (2+ / 0-)

to justify their own prejudices. They ignore the red print (what Jesus actually said), which makes of them the proverbial wolves in sheep's clothing.

      •  It ties into the idea that "once you are saved, (0+ / 0-)

        you are saved forever."

People will distort anything for their own purposes.

For example, the idea that one must be "born again" to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

There are plenty of people here in Texas who believe in that, to their own advantage. For them, once you've been dunked in a tub of water and learned to chant, "Jesusismylordandsavior"--and yes, they say that as all one word--you are saved, you are going to heaven, you've bought your non-cancellable ticket.

And they can drink, carouse, steal, commit adultery and be mean as snakes and they're still going to Heaven.

I have to point out to them that the way the verses are phrased, being "born again" is actually a minimum requirement, not a guarantee.

        Oops.

Of course, other Christian sects have these convenient "get out of hell" rituals. I've alway thought how handy it is that if you can just confess your sins before you die, according to Catholic theology, you can be forgiven them, and after a life of constant sinning, still go to heaven. "Oh, but your confession and contrition must be sincere!"  Well, faced with the fact of immediate descent into hell, whose confession and contrition wouldn't be sincere?  You still get to be cruel, mean and sinful, yet get into Heaven, you just have to have a priest around at the critical time to absolve you. (And the kind of person who counts on this type of thing will always assume that a priest will be around when they need one.)

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.
