At least in a general election.  Capuano has more recent experience in a primary, but he lost.

but lost by a whopping 19 points (Coakley 47, Capuano 28).

If she'd edged him by a few points (I've heard that she actually did put some effort into the primary, unlike the general) that would have been one thing, but that's not how it happened.  Have to say this gives me pause about Capuano.  I'm more than willing to give Markey a shot.

    •  John Tierney did this time (0+ / 0-)

And was actually favored to lose. He got caught up in some gambling operations his wife was orchestrating. Add that to the fact that his Republican opponent was a well-known gay social liberal (Richard Tisei) and the fact that his district is the reddest in Massachusetts (still pretty D at D+5, however) it looked like the end for Tierney. However, the Libertarian nominee peeled away just enough votes from Tisei to let Tierney squeak by with 48% of the vote and a 1% margin.
