    However there are only two things that matter to the GOP, taxes and defense. So I agree, refuse to entertain any bills curbing the defense cuts, no estate tax cuts, no dividend tax cuts, no other tax expenditures unless the debt ceiling is raised.

    In essence, what I propose is similar to your point. Extend tax cuts for the middle class then refuse to allow anything to pass unless the debt ceiling is raised. The prez instead of negotiating can travel the country accusing the GOP of threatening global financial disaster by refusing to honor its financial obligations.

    If he really wants to play hardball he can announce that he will suspend payments to all government contractors until the debt ceiling is raised.

          If the debt ceiling is not raised, the government has to stop sending out checks it can't cover. Stop sending checks to the defense contractors first. Tell other contractors they're next.  The Republicans will cave soon enough.
