Spencer Cox was a personal friend of mine. I'm glad to see him mentioned here. I've been trying to find the time to put together a diary about him, but with the holidays and being on the committee planning his memorial service, I've not had the time yet. I will. I promise.

Spencer was a lion of a man, a good friend, a kind soul, and one of the smartest and funniest people I've ever known.

We met in college, lost touch when he left, then found each other on facebook a couple of years ago and were tight ever since.

Spencer's death was sudden, if not wholly unexpected, given that he had been living with AIDS (not HIV, full-blown AIDS) for almost a quarter of a century. He had gotten pneumonia, but was responding to antibiotics and was expected to recover. Then he suddenly spiraled in. This all took place over 3 days. He died before I could get down to the city to see him.

Spencer was literally personally responsible for saving millions of lives, because of his work with ACT UP and TAG. Not many of us can say that. He was a hero and an American treasure. And a funny, funny, motherfucker.

Last time I saw him in person was in September, but he was a huge daily part of my life online and on the phone.

I'll miss him every day for the rest of my life.
