    Intended or unintended.

    Very humbling.

•'s hoping that it changes our approach.. (10+ / 0-)

... and overall mindset just a little bit. Gun owners are not our enemies. For the most past, they are good and decent men and women who just want to protect themselves and their families. We should conduct dialogue with them as such, especially on an issue as emotional and personal as this.

50% of the households in the United States, and really, I don't want to and don't believe that one in three people in the U.S. are villainous either; I believe we need to recognize how many people already are gun owners: I think many Progressives aren't apprised of this?

stats re 50% of households own guns.

My sources tell me that Americans own 50% of all the guns on earth. They tell me that the number of gun owners in America is decreasing, but that the number of guns owned by those gun owners is increasing.

It is entirely possible that these stats have changed drastically due to the recent run on guns that is the subject of this diary, but as far as I can see, your "50 % of households" is thirty years old. And, as I pointed out a few days ago, the current number is closer to 30%.

Three decades ago, 50 percent of households owned guns, in 2010, just 32 percent do, according to University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center.
I see what you're trying to do--and have some appreciation for it, but fudging the numbers is not helpful.

I stand by my view that gun owners (be they "reasonable", "responsible"  or "nuts") DO NOT constitute a majority, or even HALF of the US population.

Non-gun owners, according to the source cited above (and others) are in the majority.

I don't want to "get into it" with you or with anyone else on this matter--I'm so fucking tired of talking about guns and gun violence, I could puke.

I just wish we could all find one reliable source and deal with the real numbers we have.

Personally, I see no point in "vilifying" 50% or 32% of the population. But, in a debate that may ultimately come down to this country's "foundational principle" (i.e. majority rules), I do believe an accurate and reliable assessment of actual numbers is paramount.

Maybe I'm just an ill-informed progressive, but my numbers tell me that between 32-35 % of American households own guns. That is not a majority.

      •  Good and Decent people (0+ / 0-)

don't rush out to buy cases of ammo. and the same make and model of a gun used in the slaughter of 26 people.

The majority of your good and decent people you speak of are overwhelming white males, the same demographic responsible for this mass shootings AND the oh so common murder of women/and subsquent suicide of them

(ho hum. This is so common that it doesn't even provoke any outrage that I can see. Just victim blaming.)

I live in a rural area, and I don't know any yahoos like this.  Like most decent gun owners they are disgusted as well. Including this one.

"I have to go... There are two gay men knocking on my door asking me if I need any abortions or marijuana. Diary, this may be my last entry" Facebook hysteria after 2012 election
