  •  A math question (0+ / 0-)

If there are 300,000,000 guns in the US,
and an average of 6 per owner in the US,
that makes 50,000,000 owners in the US.

So how does 50,000,000 translate to 40% of Americans owning guns?

There are 311,000,000 Americans... 50 million is 17% of the population.  Maybe the numbers only included adults?  There are 237,000,000 some-odd American adults. 50 million is 22%.

Do you mean of the 114,000,000 some-odd households? You approach 40% (44%). But then, you'd be comparing households to individuals, whereas many households with guns have multiple individuals with guns (thus, presumably, 12/18+ per household).

I think the 'average' of guns/person is probably skewed by collectors, who might have dozens, whereas many others have just one or two.  I would guess that a median value would be more informative, although I don't know if one could obtain that.

Conservatives need to realize that their Silent Moral Majority is neither silent, nor moral, nor a majority.
