    ...countries there are more rapes per 100,000 population than in America;

    Very sad.

    The silver lining is that rapes seem to be going down.

    •  reported rapes...those number are only the (7+ / 0-)

      reported numbers, I have to point out in face of us being a 'reality based community"

      We have a rape problem in the US. However there are places where rape seems much more common but is almost never reported.

      In parts of the Muslim world, rape is often viewed as the woman's fault. They do not usually report it. I am being conservative in how I say that.
      In parts of Africa rape is not often reported because there is no hope of anything being done.

      So those countries' statistics on rape are really much smaller than the real numbers. I think it more than a few countries that are like this.

      It feels stupid to argue this, I admit. I don't want to seem nor am I coming from a place where I think rape in the US is not a problem. I think it's fair to compare the US to developed democracies but not to these other countries because their official statistics are tainted, as I said, by more severe under reporting.

      That said it is notable that the US has more rape than all those other Western democracies...notable and discouraging.

      •  It is good that it is reported more (0+ / 0-)

        as the link stated about why Sweden's numbers are so high. But it is also the case that even here many rapes... as in the case of the second girl that has come forward... still go unreported and the numbers are so high in places where reporting is more likely.

        The idea that men (not all rape is perpetrated by men and not all rape by men is against women... however...) such as these young men feel they can take advantage of a girl or woman and abuse them as they wish is a serious moral failing in society that is far past time that we address and correct.

        we just don't criminalize it.

          Rape is grossly underreported in the US
          In some Muslim countries it goes so far as the public consensus is that it is the womans' fault. She would get no sympathy especially from any men like her brothers or father unless they were unusual.
          To report rape in those countries would be mad. Some places the woman is then arrested for adultery! I've even heard more than once a woman being forced by family or even officials to marrry the rapist!  So their statistics I'd think are irrelevant/a joke

          •  No you can take this observation and understand (0+ / 0-)

            why so many women do not report rapes or harassment in the military. It's not so different. No one is required to marry their rapist, but often women are required to work with him daily, or for him in some cases, for months on end.
