too widespread, as in bobswern's diary and some of its comments, taking a remark by Mussolini out of context with all the intellectual rigor of Birchers attributing the US income tax to Karl Marx.*

(In contrast, it is no exaggeration for Michelle Alexander to call the mass incarceration of young males of color "the New Jim Crow".)

We can win the debate for public opinion on this outrage unless we undermine our credibility with assertions that most people would see as absurd.  Bob Abrams, very popular NY AG, lost a Senate race to Al D'Amato largely because of a wild charge of "fascist."

The difference between the coordinated police abuse we are seeing, (which has occurred often in US history) and fascism on the basis of relations common to capitalism in general, is the difference between life and death.

There are protofascist tendencies in the US Right, but at this point they are a nut fringe of a nut fringe.  They could become a serious threat in the context of a full economic collapse, as in Greece, but the present national security state is a very different phenomenon which requires a very different response.

*some of my best friends consider themselves Marxists but not Leninists, maybe Lennonists.

There's no such thing as a free market!

Join us at RASA: Repeal or Amend the Second Amendment. (Repeal will not ban guns, just help regulate them.)

    •  It's not an out of context quote (0+ / 0-)

it's actually not a quote from Mussolini at all.

The main thing that makes us not fascist is that the police are not working with the fascist groups as they are in places like Greece right now, where the police openly support fascists and protect them while they smash up immigrant neighborhoods.

The revolution will not be televised. But it will be blogged, a lot. Probably more so than is necessary.
